Hi, I’m Monique, or Moni if you prefer.
I believe every teen deserves to feel heard and understood. I’m here to create that space for your teen.
Working with teenagers for over a decade has given me a deep appreciation for how complex adolescence really is. Behind grades or attitude or busy schedules, there are often young people quietly carrying anxiety, self-doubt, pressure, loneliness, fear, perfectionism, or uncertainty about who they are and where they’re heading.
When working in schools, I became one of the ‘go-to’ teachers: the teacher students would turn to when life got tough. I was so honoured that they trusted me, and quickly found that the most meaningful moments of my career happened in these conversations. It felt magical when a student finally felt able to say what was really going on, when they felt listened to, when they began to see themselves differently and implement positive changes.
So, I trained up as a coach, wanting to create the kind of space that allows young people to slow down, reflect, build confidence, and feel more connected to themselves.
At the same time, my love of English and literature has always shaped the way I see the world. Stories help us understand ourselves and others. They help us make meaning, imagine possibilities and feel less alone. Story & Self grew from this intersection of my love of literature and my passion for helping teens to understand themselves.
My Experience
I’ve spent over a decade working closely with young people as a teacher, mentor, coach, tutor and writer.
Throughout my career in education, I’ve supported teenagers not only academically, but emotionally. This pastoral work meant so much to me, that I trained up and became one of the school’s core coaching team, offering one-to-one coaching conversations and support to students and staff.
In this time, I’ve helped students navigate confidence issues, exam anxiety, anger management, friendship difficulties, parent difficulties, perfectionism, low motivation, self-esteem struggles, and the growing pressure many young people feel about school and the future. I’ve also helped them make major decisions about university courses and future pathways.
I also have experience supporting neurodiverse learners and will tailor my support to match your teen.
Alongside coaching, I continue to offer English tutoring for high school students; to enquire about this, contact me separately on hello@storyandself.com.au.
As a teacher, the question parents asked me most often was: How do I get my teen to read? This led to me writing How to Get Your Teen to Read, a practical guide for parents supporting reluctant teen readers. If you’re ever in need of a good book recommendation, for you or your teen, let me know!
At the heart of my work is a simple belief: young people thrive when they feel understood, capable, and connected to both their own story and sense of self.
